About
After logging over 10,000 miles on the road throughout the U.S. and visiting countless boutiques I was chronically appalled at the overpriced JUNK being sold at most commercial retail stores, independent boutiques, and even traditional luxury brand stores with a rich luxury heritage!
Beautifully styled, “high end” fashion brands that inundated my Instagram feed informed me that they were not just online stores.
They had brick-and-mortars as well!
When I excitedly arrived at their flagship locations, I was often in shock at the audacity of pricing for such low-quality garments.
I learned that behind the glamourie, the majority of products were just not it.
Most of what I saw were rack and racks and racks of overpriced, polyester (read: plastic) clothing!
Although the brands’ Instagram feeds were on-point and the models were stunning, the actual product was, often, complete crap.
(They often looked better on the hanger than on the body as well. Not good for humans or the environment.)
This regular disappointment made me nostalgic for my boutique management days. Surrounded by flowing block-print dresses, chunky jewelry, velvet jackets, embroidered purses, and silk shibori scarves from around the world, it was my favorite job ever!
Learning about each of the 150+ providers for the store.
Who they were, which country their cottage industry business were based, what inspired their designs.
Working with my local staff to create stunning (+ profitable) visual merchandising displays were some of the most joyous and creative days of my life.
That boutique has since closed but I still have relationships with the providers.
My longing for expert craftsmanship, intentional clothing consumption, and conscious spirituality infused with each stitch is what lead me to establish Silk Road Moderne.
You see, most of my goods are from countries along the ancient Silk Road, that dazzling geographically diverse stretch of land from Mongolia to India.
Our providers are based in Rajasthan to Afghanistan. (We intend to visit Nepal, Mongolia and Uzbekistan in 2024!)
Why the Silk Road? Because I have always been fascinated by some of the oldest inhabited regions of our ancient Earth.
The high quality silks, the durable linens, the exquisite craftsmanship, what's not to love?
WHY SHOP SILK ROAD MODERNE?
When you purchase from Silk Road Moderne you are supporting a real human being who is receiving well beyond a living wage for their artistry.
Some of our clothes are sewn by women in India who receive a healthy, living wage, health care, and safe child care while creating these garments.
Equal energy exchanges are beautiful and required for the New Economy we have been building since 2020.
Our clothing is also made to last.
(Some of my own clothes that I’ve purchased from these same providers I’ve had for more than 10 years and they look just as good as the day I bought them!)
I’m not one for fast fashion and I’m not here to preach to you about its evils. However, the main reason I dislike fast fashion is because I want to buy something once and buy it right! I don’t want to waste any more time, money or energy on buying a similar item.
I desired a stylish wardrobe made of pieces that are made to LAST.
Getting dressed in the morning is a ritual, and everything goes together because the pieces are fabulous,
When you shop Silk Road Moderne you allow yourself to be costumed for life.
Let us collectively return to high-quality garments and prices that reflect the craftsmanship so that all energy exchanged is fair.
Let us co-create a New Economy in which everyone thrives.
Let us return to bright colors and bold prints.
Let’s reinvigorate the ancient Silk Road.
